Redecorate or else

On Saturday we made another trip to Ikea in Dallas. We were on a mission to snazz up our boring living room.
See? Boring.

I just don't know how to arrange furniture or decorate- no matter how much HGTV I subscribe to. This is what you see when you open our front door. Not so inviting. What would you do with this? We did buy some bookcases at Ikea. Oh and a new tv (via the internet). This is our "Happy PFD Day to me" present. We have never spent our PFDs so this year we decided to spend one of them. 'Specially since Sarah gave us a bonus this year. If we were still in our AK house, we would be buying windows with the bonus.

I made the kids a "boat" out of the packaging from the bookshelves.

Can you believe we are still wearing summer clothes? Today is rainy and cloudy...I actually was looking forward to it. Reminds me of Alaska.

I think the obvious choice to jazz it up is more glitter pumpkins.

I know what you mean...I watch a ton of HGTV and see the wonderful ideas...just don't exactly know how to actually make it happen!

Ok, the couches are light, the furniture is dark. The wood furniture doesn't match. You're blocking the fire place which is a lovely focal point. The pillows have some of the colors of the carpet, but the carpet is dark and barely any accent colors are used to bring out the beautiful colors of the carpet. There is nothing on the windows and barely anything on the walls. No don't get me wrong. Nothing matches in my place and I hang nothing on the walls, but I've caught a few design shows when I visit grandma and I'm just giving you the basics. Go to Barnes & Noble and look at some books. I'm only telling you these things because I love you.

You're welcome.

I agree with marthajeanthemeanmachine. =) Especially for the furniture placement. The pros on HGTV would pull that couch away from the wall (gasp) and possibly put the love seat opposite from it making a nice seating area. OR they would turn the couch to face the fireplace (but make sure you put a sofa table or something behind that couch so you are not looking at the back of the couch (gasp) and then the love seat to the side. The challenge is the darn TV. They never want the TV to compete with the fireplace so they either get rid of it, or tuck it away in a nice armoire or something. I am a huge fan of window treatments...if you have money to spend....Pottery Barn has great ones with grommets I always drool over...I think IKEA had something similar as well. And maybe paint the walls and hang some stuff? Love you too!
